About
I live in Stoke-on-Trent, on the edge of the Staffordshire Moorlands, and I photograph what is within reach of a morning.
Mostly that means the moor and millstone country around Leek, Alton and Dimmingsdale, the reservoirs above Fernilee, and the long flat light of the Yorkshire coast at Kilnsea — a place I keep going back to. Some of it reaches further: Southampton after dark, the Welsh coast at the Great Orme, a week of hard sun in Fuerteventura.
Nearly all of it was made on a Nikon D610. I'm not especially interested in gear. I'm interested in weather, and in the hour when the light hasn't decided what it's going to do yet.
Battered from the night while dead in sight;Moving not, inside a cot of living cloth;Light now gives the day more life while melting the wisp of night;Giving back a beauty not shown or given flight; From beyond the show, what came without snow is more than time in tow.Frost
I write as well — short poems, mostly about what the photographs are about: time, light, what stays and what doesn't. Some of them were written for a particular picture, and where that's true the two sit together.
There's film too, on a channel I've been quietly adding to for years.
And I build things. A mini PC turned into the router this house runs on. E-readers pushed well past what their manufacturers intended. A machine in the corner of the room that runs vision models over my own photographs. Rockets, piano, geopolitics and long slow rides down country lanes all sit in the same part of my head. Take the thing apart, find where the beauty is in it, put it back together better.
Everything here is free to look at. If you'd like a print, want to license an image, or you recognise a spot and want to know exactly where it is —say hello.
